Rejection is not a question of if, but when. Rejection is inevitable. It will come. The better question is this... When it does come, how will you deal with it?
Are you sitting in a job you hate?
Are you unemployed because of unforeseen circumstances? *Cough Covid Cough*
Are you tired? Just so, so tired?
I know I am. I have felt ALL of the above in my career and I have gotten to the point where I am just tired.
2020 has been the biggest emotional rollercoaster of my life and I’m sure I’m not alone in that statement.
It's no surprise to anyone when I say this next statement, I'm sure: This 2020 Job Market is TRASH.
I am a Professional with 6+ Years marketing experience and I cannot get a job. I have interviewed for countless jobs. I have gotten very far in those interview processes. Unfortunately, I have been let down. I have been let down quite a few times now. Maybe you have even more experience than me and STILL cannot get an interview.
What?! Why?!
^These are the questions I have been pondering quite a lot lately. WELL. It's because it is a tough job market out there. Even with lots of experience, many of you, just like me, are being let down every day.
I'm sure you are tired. I'm sure you are hurting. I'm sure you just want to work.
There are so many unemployed professionals out there that are begging to work right now. I am one of them. I am READY to work. I am qualified for these positions. If given the opportunity to do what I love, I will show these companies my worth.
But, that really doesn't matter right now in 2020. There is just so much competition and it is tough to even get an interview these days. So what can you do RIGHT NOW? Right now, when you're backed up against a wall and nowhere to go...
Focus Your Path
And then, hopefully...
Score Your Dream Job
What do I mean? Well, to put it simply. Don't waste your time wallowing in the rejections when they fly in! Because, guess what? They will!
Even if you get to that final interview and everything is finally coming together, I promise you, 2020 may have other plans. Until you get that offer letter, do not count yourself as employed. I'm not saying this to scare you. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I'm saying this as a warning and also as a motivator.
Rejection doesn't have to be scary. When you realize that your worth is not based off all of these companies, it really all starts to come together. It has to be a good fit for both parties involved. Always remember that.
If you get rejected, take the feedback and MOVE ON. There are other jobs waiting for your applications, so get at it!
Remember to focus your path and be intentional. 2020 is a different type of year, so your job searching tactics have to evolve too.
Sit back, relax, and take a journey with me.
Below I've listed out the steps necessary to make your dream job a reality:
Step One: Focus Your Career Path & Look For Jobs Intentionally.
Take a look at my blog Job Searching 101. In this blog, I walk through the first steps of the job searching process and making sure you are putting your best foot forward.
Step Two: Revamp Your LinkedIn, Resume & Cover Letter.
Again, drop by the blog Job Searching 101. You can also skip ahead to Cali Careers and do some exploring. I have some tools there specifically built to help in this revamp process. It's time to give everything a nice facelift so that your next potential employer sees that you care about what content you are presenting.
Step Three: Be Gritty, Embrace the Grind, & Overcome Rejection.
To all my Memphis readers, I, too am also from Memphis, so I hope you appreciate my word choices there. In 2020, it really is all about Grit & Grind. You have to be able to overcome rejection. Hell, become comfortable with it so that you can embrace the grind. Pick yourself back up and move onto the next one. If you aren't getting that interview, search for some key players in the company on LinkedIn and message them! Connect to them and send a personalized invite! Show your interest and some one will reach back out. If you are passionate and grinding for a job, people will take note and this can get you an interview.
Step Four: Nail The Job Interview.
Jump over to my second blog post in the Dream Job Magic series (How to Nail a Job Interview) for help with this step. If you've scored an interview, make sure you are doing everything within your power to be prepared. Because trust me, there are others out there right now who are not even getting the interviews.
Step Five: Make Sure the Role is a Good Fit For Both Parties Involved.
Always, always remember that. As I mentioned earlier, it is so important that both parties are happy in order to move forward in the offer stage of the interview process. It takes two to tango, right? Don't forget you are interviewing them as well. You want to make sure that this is a good fit for your expertise and, more importantly that they care about your wants and needs for your career.
If you make it through all of these steps unscathed, hopefully that means you are accepting an offer and on your way to a new, promising job. Just remember to never stop. Never stop in the pursuit of your dreams. You are worth it and the right job is right around the corner. You just can't stop looking.
Until Next Time,
Jessie
